Mrs. Dorothy would love to come to your area to share this musical merriment!
You can also play music at home with your families...Let's make a musical instrument!
HOW TO MAKE A SHAKY SHAKER: Open a clean, empty plastic bottle. Put some birdseed, salt, uncooked noodles, etc., in the plastic bottle. This would be a neat time to experiment with the sound the shaky shaker will make, depending on the amount of birdseed, etc., that you place in the shaker. Put some non-toxic glue along the rim of the bottle, then put the cap back on the bottle securely. Adults only could use hot glue, which is my preference. Now you’re ready to make music…The shaky shaker is a wonderful instrument to teach counting (how many beats in a measure), as well as rhythm. |
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE BONGOS: Don’t throw away those plastic butter containers. Recycle them instead! Wash an empty plastic container, turn it upside down, and play!
HOW TO PLAY THE SPOONS: Children love to play rhythm sticks. If you don’t have wooden rhythm sticks, why not take some spoons or unsharpened new pencils and tap them together to the beat?
HOW TO MAKE A BAG MARACA: Hey! You don’t want to throw that brown paper lunch bag away…You can turn it into a musical instrument instead! Put ½ cup of dried beans or macaroni noodles into the bag. Scrunch the top of the bag together with your hands. Now tie a piece of yarn onto the scrunched part of the bag. (A couple of square knots work well.) You have now created a bag maraca! Have fun as you hold the bag at the top and shake the bag to the beat of the music as you listen!
First of all, adults should help children with these projects, and should monitor their play with this or any toy. Thanks!
